FAQ for Installation of USB EV2300 Drivers for Windows 98SE

Q. I got a "File not found error" while following the instructions for first time installation. Am I missing some files?
A.
You may be missing files if you did not copy them properly or did not unzip all of them to the directory from which you are attempting to install.
There should be a total of 5 files : 2 files with extension .inf, 2 files with extension .sys and 1 file with extension .bin
If you have all these files in the directory from which you are attempting to install, then the error may be because
The proper action to take for this error is to Cancel the installation, Reboot and follow the update driver steps.
If a file cannot be found then press "Cancel" to Cancel the installation.
Do NOT choose "Skip File" in any case.

Q. Windows does not show me the extensions of any file. How do i view it?
A.
In Windows Explorer select the "Folder Options" under the "View" or "Tools" Menu. This will open an options window. Select the "View" tab from the top of that window. Then uncheck the "Hide extensions for known file types" options.

Q. Windows does not show me the .sys file. It does not even show it in the source provided to me!
A.
In Windows Explorer select the "Folder Options" under the "Tools" Menu. This will open an options window. Select the "View" tab from the top of that window. Check the "Show Hidden files and Folders" option.

Q. Windows 98 SE crashes with the BSOD(Blue screen of death) when i unplug the board. Is this a known bug and if yes, then when can we expect an updated version of the driver that fixes this problem?
Q. Are there any known problems with the driver on Windows 98 SE? What procedures do you recommend to avoid the known problems?
A. Windows 98 SE only crashes with the BSOD when the EV2300 device is unplugged while it is communicating with the PC. Please see the list of known problems before using the software/drivers. Though this is a known problem, we will most likely NOT fix the problem, since Microsoft has stopped supporting Windows 98 SE. There are also reports of other USB devices being unstable on windows 98, therefore we recommend that you follow the recommended procedures to protect your data. You should not experience any crashes if you follow the recommended procedures.

Q. Why did Texas Instruments release a driver with known problems?
A.
Customer feedback. We did not support Windows 98 originally because of the known problems. Microsoft is stopping support for Windows 98SE and we were unable to fix the problem. However some of our customers had only Windows 98 SE machines and they enquired about this. Once it was known to them that there is a working driver but with known problems, every customer wanted the driver regardless of that fact. Therefore we decided to simplify the enquiry/distribution process by releasing the Windows 98SE drivers with a word of caution.  See
known problems and recommended procedures.

Q. Does the EV2300 USB board use two drivers on Windows 98SE?
A.
Yes. The first driver "TI USB Firmware Updater" has a typical life of a few milliseconds if it is working properly, therefore it is very difficult to uninstall using conventional uninstall driver methods. The second driver "TI USB bq80xx Driver" is the driver that is visible and used for communication with the application software.

Q. I followed all the driver uninstall and install steps but my application does not seem to communicate with the EV2300. What should i do?
A.
Firstly make sure that the EV2300 is connected. Go to Device Manager and make sure that "TI USB bq80xx Driver" is present under the Universal Serial Bus controller. If it is not present then it means that the drivers were not installed properly. Please uninstall and reinstall.
If it is present then check its properties. It should say that the device is working properly. If not then uninstall and reinstall.
If the device is working properly then make sure that  you have a target device connected to the EV2300 and that the target matches the what the application expects. Make sure that only one instance of the application is run. If multiple instances of the application were running at any point, then reboot and try again.
Disconnect the EV2300, wait 5 seconds, reconnect and test. Reset the target and test. If all the above fail then Contact the application software provider.

Q. I followed all the driver uninstall and install steps but Device Manager does show not show "TI USB bq80xx Driver".
I followed all the driver uninstall and install steps but Device Manager reports that "TI USB bq80xx Driver" is NOT working properly.
A.  Make sure that you are running Windows 98 SE and NOT Windows 98. "Properties" of "My Computer" on Desktop should show this information.
Make sure that you followed all the steps in the Uninstall/Install. Do the Special Uninstall steps after uninstalling, then try the installation again. If you still have problems, then you may contact the vendor who provided you with the software or Texas Instruments Customer Support Center/Marketing team.

Q. What is Windows 98 SE?
A.  SE stands for "Second Edition". Windows 98 SE is the later version of Windows 98. The EV2300 USB drivers were written for Windows 98 SE. The drivers may not work on the original Windows 98. Use on the original Windows 98 at your own risk.

Q. The EV2300 works properly only on one USB port. It does not work ( properly ) on other USB ports.
A.  You may have had old drivers in the past and forgotten to update each port. The port that was updated works properly and the port that was not updated does not work. Consider using the Advanced user method in the Update Document to avoid problems with other/newer ports.

Q. The EV2300 is connected through a hub and it does not work ( properly ). The EV2300 causes Windows to crash sometimes when it is connected through a USB hub.
A.
The Windows 98SE driver was not tested with a USB hub between the EV2300 and the PC. Please see the
known problems and recommended procedures document. If you have problems, the only solution is to connect the EV2300 directly.

Q. I installed some drivers and now whenever I plug in the EV2300, my computer hangs.
A.
This problem is seen when incorrect drivers are installed(usually drivers that are not meant for the EV2300). Windows 98SE typically warns the user if an incompatible driver is being installed, or if the driver being installed does not include the EV2300 in its list of supported devices. If you ignored the warnings from Windows the only recourse is to perform the special and advanced user uninstall and then follow the install directions for the EV2300 drivers.
