MSP-EXP430FR5969 Out Of Box Demo
Welcome to the new MSP-EXP430FR5969 LaunchPad's Out Of Box Demo!
Connecting to the Computer
Attach the LaunchPad to your computer with the included micro USB cable.
The Green LED at the top of the board should light up, indicating the eZ-FET on-board emulator is powered on correctly.
The Red and Green LEDs near the bottom of the board should toggle alternately for a short duration, indicating the Out Of Box demo is running on the MSP430FR5969
USB Driver Installation
*Note: The drivers are bundled and installed with Code Composer Studio or IAR Embedded Workbench for MSP430. You may skip this step if the drivers are successfully installed.
Install the LaunchPad drivers if needed. Download the driver package.
- After extracting the driver package, navigate to install_root_directory/emulation/drivers/msp430/
- Copy DPInst.exe or DPInst64.exe (depending on your operating system) from the /DPInst/ folder into the /USB_CDC/ folder.
- Run the DPInst.exe or DPInst64.exe in the /USB_CDC/ folder.
Proceed after the installer has successfully installed the drivers.
Connect GUI to Serial Communication Port
Open Device Manager and identify the correct COM port number associated with MSP Application UART1
Select the corresponding COM port in the GUI from the dropdown list and click the Connect button. You are now ready to collect data with the LaunchPad.
Live Temperature Gathering Mode
After the GUI is connected to the LaunchPad, click the Start button under Live Temp Mode inside the Application Controls panel. This puts the LaunchPad into the live temperature gathering mode.
MSP430FR5969 uses its 12bit ADC to sample and convert the signals obtained from its internal Temperature Sensor then sends the raw data through the UART Backchannel to PC.
The GUI keeps a buffer of the most recent 100 temperature measurements as displayed in the graph to the right.
Click the Stop button to exit the Live Temp Mode.
Try Changing the Temperature
Touch the MSP430FR5969 with your finger and see if you can influence the temperature.
FRAM Data Logging Mode
After the GUI is connected to the LaunchPad, click the Start button under FRAM Log Mode inside the Application Controls Panel. This puts the LaunchPad into the FRAM data logging mode.
The red LED1 blinks 3 times to indicate successful entry.
In this mode, the MSP430FR5969 enters Low Power Mode 3.5 and wakes up every 5 seconds to measure and record its input voltage and temperature to FRAM (visible each wakeup by the blinking green LED2).
To exit from data logging mode, click the S2 pushbutton on the LaunchPad. The red LED1 lights up shortly to indicate successful exit from data logging.
*Note: The GUI will disconnect from the LaunchPad automatically shortly after pressing Start. This is because the eUSCI module used for UART communication is switched off in LPM 3.5.
Transfer FRAM Logged Data from LaunchPad to GUI
Follow the steps below to transfer and display logged voltage and temperature data sitting in FRAM.
- If not already, exit from data logging mode by clicking the S2 pushbutton on the LaunchPad. The red LED1 lights up shortly to indicate successful exit from data logging.
- Re-establish communication between LaunchPad and GUI by selecting the corresponding COM port in the GUI from the dropdown list and clicking the Connect button.
- Hit the Transfer FRAM Data button to download the logged voltage and temperature data from the LaunchPad.
After the transfer is completed, the voltage and temperature data are plotted to the right.
Running on Super Capacitor
With the MSP430's ultralow-power FRAM, this application provides the possibility to continue logging voltage and temperature data while powering the MSP430FR5969 with just the on-board super capacitor.
The next few slides provides detailed setups to setup the LaunchPad to run off of the Super Cap.
Charging the Super Capacitor
Configure the jumpers on your MSP-EXP430FR5969 LaunchPad as shown in the figure above to charge the Super Cap.
- To charge the super cap, power must be coming from a debugger (eZ-FET or JTAG) or external power through J10. In this case, the LaunchPad is powered by the USB cable through the eZ-FET debugger.
- Set J10 jumper to select "Debugger".
- Set J2 jumper to select "Use" and then set a jumper across J11 to begin charging.
- Allow 2~3 minutes for the Super Cap to fully charge.
- After the Super Cap has charged, click the Start button under FRAM Log Mode inside the Application Controls Panel. This puts the LaunchPad into the FRAM data logging mode.
Disconnecting the LaunchPad from Computer
While the LaunchPad is in the FRAM logging mode, configure the jumpers on your MSP-EXP430FR5969 LaunchPad as shown in the figure above before disconnecting the LaunchPad from the computer.
- Disconnect J11 to stop charging the Super Cap.
- Disconnect "V+" and "RST" jumpers on J13. This prevents the Super Cap from back powering the eZ-FET debugger after disconnecting from the computer.
- Unplug the USB cable connecting the LaunchPad to your computer.
The LaunchPad should now be running off of the Super Cap only, continuing to wakeup every 5 seconds to measure/log voltage and temperature.
Reconnecting the LaunchPad to Computer after running off Super Cap
- Exit from data logging mode by clicking the S2 pushbutton on the LaunchPad. The red LED1 lights up shortly to indicate successful exit from data logging.
- Reconnect LaunchPad to computer via USB cable.
- Set jumpers "V+" and "RST" on J13
- Set jumper J2 to "Bypass"
- Re-establish communication between LaunchPad and GUI by selecting the corresponding COM port in the GUI from the dropdown list and clicking the Connect button.
- Hit the Transfer FRAM Data button to download the logged voltage and temperature data from the LaunchPad.
After the transfer is completed, the voltage and temperature data are plotted to the right.
